Review
This
1988 documentary was in many respects the start of the true-crime
wave that won ground during the 2010s. Errol Morris' uninvasive,
seemingly impartial directorial style became trendsetting for
documentaries, even if it wasn't quite groundbreaking. And his
subjects, particularly murder-suspect Randall Adams, gave the film
an intensity and honesty that eclipsed the narrative value of the
case itself, which - to be honest - Morris all but over-represented
and over-reenacted here in The Thin Blue Line. The picture won a
host of awards, but was disqualified for the consideration for the
Academy Award because it was marketed as "nonfiction" rather than a
documentary.
