Review
12-year-old bully victim Shaun
(Thomas Turgoose) comes of age in Thatcher era working-class England, at
a time when a part of the British skinhead culture is evolving into
white nationalism. And we follow his inclusion into a much older gang of
teens and young adults who give him friendship and a sense of belonging,
but also a number of influences which test his moral compass. This
clearly personal film written and directed by Shane Meadows finds a
wonderful balance between humour and seriousness in its delve into
rather bleak subject material. We're given an inside look into a
fascinating, smouldering sub-culture where pride and unity clash with
frustration and inferiority complexes. A wonderfully acted and
intelligently directed picture with a refreshing lack of bias.
