Review
Young Libuse Safránková is a delight in the
title character of this humanised version of the Cinderella story, as
conceived by Czech writer
Božena Němcová. Set and shot around the Svihov castle and the
surrounding forests of Bohemia, the film has got a mythical atmosphere
and is rare for combining the fantastical elements of the fairytale with
a down-to-earth and realistic portrait of the leading characters,
including a warm relationship between the king and his son. The film has
become a Christmas holiday classic in various European countries, and
continues to attract new audiences - arguably due to its timeless
quality. A fine piece of traditional European filmmaking.
