Review

A sweet little romantic drama with a big heart and plenty of 1990s movie phoniness, starring Marisa Tomei as a 20-something diner waitress in Minneapolis, and Christian Slater as her unworldly, socially awkward colleague with a congenital heart defect. The script telegraphs all its major plot developments and does so without any remonstrations for Hollywood clichés, which makes an otherwise pleasant story a lot less effective. You may be willing to believe that Christian Slater could be this odd, but the filmmakers' obvious need to make him less and less weird and more and more hot as the story progresses is a detraction from the sympathy they want you to feel for the sick, poor kid, et cetera, et cetera.
