Review

A cynical, money-driven modern art scene in Miami Beach is given a rollicking in Dan Gilroy's latest film, which may look fresh and interesting at first glance, but turns out to be almost as superficial as some of the characters it depicts. The rawness and originality of Gilroy's previous film, Nightcrawler, is nowhere to be found here. Velvet Buzzsaw camouflages as a complex, deep and original movie, but is in essence a simple horror flick. It's just that the horror elements, which consist of regular, predictable slayings of the film’s most selfish and sleazy characters, are uninspired and painfully conventional.
