Review
A so-called romantic comedy about
cultural differences set in the midst of a hypersensitized,
racialized modern USA. The story itself is about as sad as the state
of affairs that it tries to satirize, and there's almost nothing
funny or romantic about it, despite Jonah Hill's and Lauren London's
best efforts in front of the camera. The writers (Hill with director
Kenya Barris) aim to show how insensitive the boomers (the parents)
are compared to the millennials (the "kids"), but it's all cliches
and simplifications. And unless you're up to date on the current
sociopolitical situation in the US, which (un)fortunately most
people are, You People will make little sense. Another thing
making little sense is the film's sudden shift in tone towards the
end, when the filmmakers desperately want to show their hopes for
the future. I guess their sentiment was that you can't argue with
that kind of optimism, no matter how vapidly it's presented.
