This beautiful actress of Norwegian descent was a popular leading lady in the 1960s, after breaking through in the Hitchcock films The Birds and Marnie. Originally a model, Hitch saw her in a commercial and recruited her to The Birds, needing a new muse after Grace Kelly's emigration to Monaco. She gradually fell out with Hitchcock during the filming of Marnie, arguably her best film. Her career after this was negligible. Mother of actress Melanie Griffith.
