Handsome leading man of mainstream American movies of the 1980s and 1990s who broke through as a child actor in parts such as E.T. and The Outsiders before making a successful transition to adult roles with the now cult-classic The Hitcher in 1986 and the should-be cult-classic Kid. After a good start to the 1990s, his career faded and Howell spent the rest of the decade and the early 2000s doing various direct-to-video action movies.
