Peter Lorre's performance in Fritz Lang's M will forever be monumental in film history. It was one of the most daring and haunting moments of acting ever, and way ahead of its time. Lorre's subsequent move to Hollywood films could have been more successfull as he took on too many unchallenging roles and was ultimately both typecast and caricatured, but his talent was never in doubt and he kept turning in fine performances throughout, notably in John Huston film noirs such as The Maltese Falcon and Beat the Devil, as well as in Casablanca.
