Peter Lorre's performance in Fritz Lang's M will forever remain monumental in film history. It was one of the most daring and haunting moments of acting ever – and well ahead of its time. Lorre's subsequent move to Hollywood could have been more successful, as he took on too many unchallenging roles and was ultimately both typecast and caricatured. Still, his talent was never in doubt, and he continued to deliver fine performances throughout, notably in John Huston film noirs such as The Maltese Falcon and Beat the Devil, as well as in Casablanca.
