Review
Not really a sequel to Susanne Bier's
hugely successful
2018 film other than in name
and basic concept, Bird Box Barcelona was made by a Spanish
production company with original producers Dylan Clark and Chris
Morgan, obviously to capitalize on their previous success. The movie
turns the table and sees (pun intended) it all from the perspective
of the "seers", as we follow protagonist Sebastián (Mario Casas) on
a quest through the Catalan capital to "save lost sheep", as his
strange daughter Anna (Alejandra Howard) puts it. Although there is
an initial nerve in the turning of the tables, the stereotypical
horror tropes which it is all enclosed in become prevalent far too
early for the predictable ending to hold any sort of tension or
relevance. Despite fair production values and a well-cast Mario
Casas (Contratiempo,
El Bar), this is a stale spin-off which ultimately leaves you
underwhelmed.
