Review
Here is a half-baked but also
rather enjoyable little piece from director Jim Jarmusch – an homage to
small-town USA and horror film history. The Dead Don't Die exists
at the intersection between spoof and meta-cinema with its askew look at
the zombie apocalypse subgenre. What's nice about Jarmusch's approach
here is his eye for the small details around town and in the characters.
They aren't overdone in the same manner that the story and its execution
are, which is essential for our patience in spending 104 minutes in this
otherworldly meta-universe. Just don't expect much in the way of scares
or novel narrative ideas. Bill Murray, Adam Driver, and Chloë Sevigny
seem to be enjoying themselves in the lead roles, whereas young Caleb
Landry Jones stands out among the ensemble cast.
