Review
Not for the first time
does Paul Verhoeven smudge the premise of a good motion picture with
going too far too fast. The screenplay by Andrew Marlowe is an update of
James Whale's The Invisible Man, but Marlowe's horror-pop does
nothing to credit H. G. Wells' classic story. The early part of the film
is both visually impressive and suspenseful, but then Verhoeven suddenly
goes for the shocks without having the foundation to back it up. Kevin
Bacon looks good in the title role, but what should have been a
development in his character is only a silly, transparent (literally)
transformation.
