Review
This remake of the 1956 horror
classic of the same name boasts high-end production values and beautiful
cinematography. And along with a top-notch cast, this almost makes you
forget that you are, in fact, watching a horror flick. As the
supernatural concept starts taking over – literally – the suspension of
disbelief is somewhat challenged, but slowly and surely the film makes
its way to your gut, not least thanks to exquisite prosthetic effects.
Donald Sutherland and Brooke Adams give committed, nuanced performances.
And the director Philip Kaufman adds some hypnotic touches, especially
in what turns out to be a chilling ending – which has an emblematic,
transcending quality. There are fun cameos from
Kevin McCarthy, who played the lead as Dr. Miles Bennell in the
original, and Robert Duvall as a crazed priest on a swing in the opening
scene.
