Review
Patrick Bateman meets
Léon and an
extra injection of everyday philosophy in this rather enjoyable
crime thriller from the good old team of director David Fincher and
writer Andrew Kevin Walker (Seven).
An invested Michael Fassbender plays "The Killer", an expert
assassin whose perfect track record has made him a self-professed
master of the art. At least up until now. As he prepares patiently
for his next assignment, he offers his often
pessimistic, always cynical meanderings on life, based on everything from
methodology and statistics to poetry and the triviality of death.
It's quite soothing to let Fincher chaperon you into this in many
ways dull, high-stakes world. He brings his trademark Fincherian
underworldly tension and fascination with transgression, which makes
me willing to overlook those requisite cheap-looking Netflix
production values. For quite some time The Killer looks capable of
becoming something unique, perhaps even a new career-high for
Fincher. Unfortunately, the script ultimately isn't able to venture into more
creative territory than your typical revenge plot and chasing-down
of increasingly more boss-like baddies, but luckily Fincher offers
bits and pieces of inventiveness and excitement along the trodden
path. The best example of the latter may well be Tilda Swinton's
one-scene cameo, in which she engages in a
great little duel of wits and powers with our man Fassbender.
