Review
The spoof sub-genre, which was
more or less created and perfectioned by the Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker team
during the 1980s, saw a small resurgence in the early 1990s with films
such as Abrahams'
Hot Shots! (1991) and this totally forgettable yarn
written and directed by the penner of Police Academy 3 and 4, no less.
The writing was on the wall, but apparently not on the page, because the
script is uninspired and flat both when it comes to story and jokes. Admittedly, there are many of them (the latter), so some might be
hits for some viewers, but it constantly feels like the filmmakers have
included every single idea they came up with one late drunken night,
with absolutely no filter or quality control afterwards. And Emilio
Estevez demonstrates quite effectively that he hasn't got the comic
timing or ability of Leslie Nielsen or even his brother Charlie Sheen.
