Review
There is a quiet austerity to
this post-apocalyptic sci-fi directed by and starring George Clooney.
The film is well shot and atmospheric, but also under-communicated and
detached, arguably deliberately, though the result is nevertheless that
the story is solely evocative from a cerebral point of view. That
inexplicable lifelessness you feel encapsulated by – is that there by
design? If the answer is yes, Clooney the filmmaker is a callous cynic
trying to suck the vivacity out of you. If the answer is no, he's a less
accomplished director than I had thought. That being said, the ending
has an elegance and a slight poignancy in the midst of otherwise more or
less clichéd plot developments. And there is an attractive futuristic
touch to the art direction and Alexandre Desplat's musical score.
