Richie Rich (1994)
A surprisingly effective
adaptation about the "world's richest boy", starring Macaulay Culkin in
a Richie Rich vein of form. The film has comedy and morality in equal
doses, like any modern children's movie aspire to. And although the
comedy is very much conventional, the story's obvious message about
money and wealth not being the full answer to our problems is
well-presented and discussed. The director Donald Petrie (Mystic
Pizza,
Grumpy Old Men) works well with the
film's angle and obviously has quite a bit of fun together with his
talented cast, not least Jonathan Hyde
as Cadbury and Edward Herrmann and Christine Ebersole as Mrs. and Mr. Rich.
There's also a fine musical score by Alan Silvestri.
