Review
This sweet high-school romance, Cameron
Crowe’s first feature, was hailed for being a cut above its peers at
the time of release, mainly because the characters and the
challenges they face are utterly ordinary and therefore feel
authentic. Crowe’s script is clever, but not so clever that it comes
off as showboating – it’s clear that he remembers many of the
mechanisms at play for a first love. John Cusack and Ione Skye
became representatives for the offbeat 1980s youngsters, and the
film gained a cult following, not least due to the emblematic scene
where Cusack holds a boombox in the air outside of Skye's bedroom to
express his love for her. Yes, it’s fifty-fifty romantic and tacky.
