Snake Eyes
(1998)

Review
Kinetic camerawork and a flamboyant
performance by Nicolas Cage, boosted by his newfound post-Face/Off
confidence, isn't quite enough to give this fairly run-of-the-mill
thriller the momentum needed to keep it engaging for its full running
time. The setup is an assassination at a high-stakes boxing match in a casino venue in
Atlantic City, and De Palma has an ambition to move the story along
in real-time, with the occasional flashback to remind us of various
obviousnesses. The movie's aspiration to be clever is ruined by its
tendency to overexplain the so-called mystery, and what we're
ultimately left with is Cage's swagger and some fairly streamlined
action sequences which will satisfy 1990s aficionado at least to
some extent.
