Terrifier (2016) Followed by: Terrifier 2 (2022)
The budget is visibly low, the script badly underdeveloped, and the creativity dries up quite some time before the ending... but this "home made" slasher is still rather impressive and features a couple of well-made, gruelling scenes. The filmmaker is called Damien Leone, who after having made two previous low-budget horror movies was able to get this one off the ground through crowdfunding. His antagonist, Art the Clown, is a remnant from Leone's first anthology film All Hallows' Eve. But although Art has his very own quirks and peculiarities, he is basically just another killer clown, with little in terms of personality or background. This is one of the reasons why Terrifier becomes flat and dull long before the finish line. The three girls the killer is chasing can only scream so much before we figure out that this is all they're ever going to be able to do. Leone is clever enough to include small bits of absurdist comedy interspersed in all the blood and gore, just to give us some added fun, but with one single set and one single mode for the final 45 minutes of running time, the film will surely wear out even the most enthusiastic horror fan.
