Review
Filmmaker Damián Szifron (Relatos
salvajes) deserves kudos for trying to find a new
angle on a worn recipe, but he still largely fails in his efforts
with this ultimately unremarkable and flat investigative thriller.
Shailene Woodley is believable regarding the backstory of her
character, but she's no Clarice Starling, and the relation between
her and Ben Mendelsohn as the FBI Special Agent who takes her under
his wing feels forced and badly motivated. It works more like a
gimmick to move the story forward to the finale everything has been
building up to, but which ultimately becomes more of an anticlimax
than a real climax, despite the interesting casting choice of Ralph
Ineson as Dean Possey.
