Review
For two thirds of Unhinged,
director Derrick Borte is making a great film. A psychological thriller
with an expert combo of breathtaking realism and bleak social
commentary. A
Falling Down for the 2020s, with a
perspective and a background story that make the extreme premise
palpable, even for a shielded European. Then a landslide of Hollywood
conventions, genre cliches and B-movie aesthetics set in and make the
final 20 minutes or so almost unwatchable. You build something up, then
you destroy it, seemingly on purpose. Young Gabriel Bateman finds the
right energy and is a pleasure to watch as the son.
