Review
This farce spun around one
single premise – the death of the title character, and how everyone
around him still think he’s alive – became something of a surprise hit
upon release in the summer of 1989. The unrelenting physical performance
of Terry Kiser and his stunt double may be the film’s most impressive –
and funniest – element, because it sure isn’t easy to be swayed or
carried away by the repetitive, exhausting and rather uninventive script
we (and Bernie) are being dragged through. The two leads, Andrew McCarthy and
Jonathan Silverman, enjoyed what would arguably be their last moment of
stardom in the wake of this movie, after having showed a lot of promise
earlier in the decade. The undisciplined direction is by Ted Kotcheff (First
Blood). Followed by a universally panned sequel in 1993.
