Joaquin Phoenix
FILMOGRAPHY (ONLY REVIEWED ENTRIES)
Joaquin Phoenix had the difficult task of carving out a career as the brother of River Phoenix, but while he may not have exactly picked up where his brother left off, he has certainly garnered similar amounts of critical acclaim. Phoenix had small acting roles since the mid-80s, but first gained significant attention with Gus Van Sant's To Die For in 1995, after a four-year hiatus from films. Incidentally, Van Sant had directed brother River in both My Own Private Idaho and Drugstore Cowboy and was one of the key figures behind his enduring reputation. Joaquin followed up with a turn in Oliver Stone's U-Turn, before his career truly took off at the turn of the millenium, with his Oscar-nominated performance in Gladiator. The year 2004 was a busy one for Phoenix, who has a knack for choosing roles that are both varied and challenging. He has consistently veered off from the traditional Hollywood star persona, instead opting for offbeat roles and films. After three previous nominations, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his remarkable performance as Joker in 2020.
