Review
An entry in the psychopath
killer sub-genre that was popularized in the early 1990s. The plot is
never close to holding up, and towards the end, director Alan J. Pakula
doesn't even try to cover up the shortcomings in Matthew Chapman's
script, but for the majority of its running time, he manages to do just
that through fine pacing and a smouldering build-up. The film looks and
plays like a bona fide thriller, with Kevin Kline giving a sympathetic
performance deserving of a better denouement not based around a staged
showdown with a cartoon villain. The screenwriter continued in the same
mould with
Color of Night two years later.
