Review
George Clooney plays an unscrupulous TV host of a trashy and immoral
financial advice show who is audaciously attacked and taken hostage
live on the air by a begrudged viewer who has lost his life savings
following Clooney's bad tip. This is acerbic and partly
well-formulated social criticism with a hint of absurdity to it;
think a cross between
Dog Day Afternoon,
Mad City
and The
Big Short. Unfortunately, the film outstays its
welcome and cannot bring any true emotional relevance into the mix,
and so there remains a void between the over-the-top atmosphere in
the film's first half and the sudden heart it gains towards the end.
