BIO
With their characteristically
stylized and often pretentious social realism, Svend Wam and Petter
Vennerød defined Norwegian cinema from the mid 1970s to the early 1990s.
They were ambitious filmmakers with a particular voice who weren't
afraid of taking on subjects which were considered controversial on screen at
the time, from vulgarisms, explicit eroticism and homosexuality to the
conflict between the counterculture of their youth (1960s and 1970s) and
the consumerism of their middle-age (1980s). Wam & Vennerød never lacked
critics, especially in the Norwegian press, but most of their films
attracted relatively large audiences in their native country – and they
all had interesting aspects to them, even when they not quite worked (Adjø
solidaritet) or fell
completely flat (Lakki).
Their magnum opus remains their 1976 film
Lasse & Geir,
which is a great watch to this day, much thanks to Wam's crisp dialogue
and the delightfully polemic lead characters. The dinner scene from
said film is probably among the most potent single scenes in Norwegian
film history.
