Review
The second entry in the James Bond series
has a good story and basic premise, but the movie opens sluggishly and is let down
by some terrible acting, notably by Lotte Lenya as one of Bond's main
antagonists. Connery also is rather unconvincing in his early fighting
scenes, he seems slow and stiff for his age, and he is not helped by
some rather unimpressive and badly choreographed action. Luckily, the
movie picks up and comes alive with the introduction of Robert
Shaw's sneaky baddie, and we're given some nice thrills on rail and at
sea during the rather engaging finale, even if there's never any real
nerve involved in any of it. At 21, Daniela Bianchi was the youngest
ever Bond girl, although you wouldn't guess it. Her dialogue was dubbed,
which doesn't help her performance. A terminally ill Pedro Armendáriz (3 Godfathers)
is fine as Bond's associate in his final role.
