Gabriel Byrne
FILMOGRAPHY (ONLY REVIEWED ENTRIES)
Few portraits have been written about this talented Irishman without using the word brooding, although he doesn't quite like it himself. It is difficult however, to not point to the mysterious and somewhat sinister presence of Byrne when describing his contribution to film. More than anything Byrne has been very selective with roles, and he didn't even go to America, let alone Hollywood, until his late thirties. My first encounter with him was in his aristocratic potrait of professor Friedrich Baer, Winony Ryder's love interest in Little Women, and ever since I've been struck by the sophisticated and, yes, brooding quality he brings to his roles. Byrne was memorable in the Coen-brothers' brilliant Miller's Crossing (1990) and Bryan Singer's major success The Usual Suspects (1995).
