Ruggedly handsome and immensely talented leading man with character actor sensibilities and an uncanny ability to transform his appearance for a wide range of roles, ages and mannerisms. The son of British/Irish poet Cecil Day-Lewis, he began his career in British theatre and cinema in the early 1980s, eventually becoming a Hollywood leading man by the early 1990s. Although Day-Lewis has been incredibly picky with his roles, he has earned a reputation as a critics' and directors' favourite thanks to his powerful, idiosyncratic performances – sometimes bordering on excess.
