BIO
One of the most hailed
and critically acclaimed contemporary American filmmakers, Woody
Allen made a name for himself in the 1970s as the spokesman for young,
urban intellectuals, discussing relationships, sex, and existential
issues. His neurotic, quirky real-life persona often took hold of his onscreen characters.
Through incisive, intelligent,
and often self-ironic comments on life, Allen brought to life talky,
charming films such as
Annie Hall (1977) and
Manhattan (1979). His
anti-Hollywood, philosophical, and heavily intellectual persona has made him
both loved and derided by the public. While
his films have usually received praise from the critics, they haven't always been the most
profitable.
