Antonio Banderas gained a respectable name for himself in Spanish cinema before getting an international break in Bille August's House of the Spirits. Although the film fared only moderately, it was (along with a good role in Philadelphia) the springboard to superstardom for the young Spaniard. Although shying from the most challenging roles, Banderas throughout the 90s confirmed his position as one of the business' most distinct leading men with his deep eyes, sensitive appearance and exotic looks.
