Antonio Banderas gained a respectable name for himself in Spanish cinema before achieving international recognition in Bille August's The House of the Spirits. Although the film fared only moderately, it was (along with a good role in Philadelphia) the springboard to superstardom for the young Spaniard. Although he shied away from the most challenging roles, Banderas confirmed his position throughout the 1990s as one of the business' most distinct leading men with his deep eyes, sensitive appearance and exotic looks.
