Vivacious American actress who pulls off portraying everything from menaces to twaddlers, and whose versatility and range have earned her a solid reputation in an industry which often prioritises exteriors and beauty in female performers. She did, however, arrive late in the movie business after spending over a decade on stage. Her first notable role was as Gary Busey's wife in the 1978 drama Straight Time. But it was her portrayal of Annie Wilkes in Stephen King's Misery that propelled her to subsequent leading roles and fame.
