FILMMAKER FILMOGRAPHY (ONLY REVIEWED ENTRIES)
Iconic and intense character actor and lead of American movies who has endured a high status among audiences and critics alike for the better part of three decades. After starting out as a teenage performer in the early 1980s in films such as Taps and Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Penn matured into more serious roles towards the late 1980s, even if his acting skills were still being honed. It wasn't until the 1990s, after a failed marriage with pop star Madonna, that Penn really impressed the critics - both in front of and behind the camera. He made his directorial debut with the promising The Indian Runner, before delivering a string of power-house performances in films such as Carlito's Way, Dead Man Walking and Sweet and Lowdown. Penn has often been at his best portraying unintellectual and easy-minded young men in criminal dramas, whereas as a filmmaker he has often told stories which discuss profound moral dilemmas.
