FILMMAKER FILMOGRAPHY (ONLY REVIEWED ENTRIES)
Iconic and intense character actor and leading man of American cinema who has maintained a high status among audiences and critics alike for the better part of his long career. After starting out as a teenage performer in the early 1980s in films such as Taps and Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Penn matured into more serious roles by the late 1980s, although his acting skills were still being honed. It wasn't until the 1990s, after a failed marriage to pop star Madonna, that Penn truly began to impress critics – both in front of and behind the camera. He made his directorial debut with the promising The Indian Runner, before delivering a string of powerhouse performances in films such as Carlito's Way, Dead Man Walking, and Sweet and Lowdown. He won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in Clint Eastwood's Mystic River. Penn has often been at his best portraying unintellectual and simple-minded young men in criminal dramas, while as a filmmaker, he has frequently explored stories that discuss profound moral dilemmas.
