The year of
sentimentality
Sentimental
films, such as
The Help,
The Artist,
Midnight in Paris
and War Horse, dominate the Academy Award
nominations this year, and The Artist turned out
the big winner with 5 awards. It's a far cry from the
courageous filmmaking of the 1970s, in which
controversy, scrutiny and strong screenplays were
awarded. This year's Oscars therefore wasn't the most
interesting from a critic's point of view, but with
Billy Crystal back to host, the spectacle at least lived up to people's expectations. A
little Ricky Gervais would of course have made it even
more spectacular.
Popular
wins for veterans
Meryl Streep (her first
since
Sophie's Choice)
and
Woody Allen (his first
since Hannah and Her Sisters) wrapped up the
evening in additon to The Artist big sweep of the
heaviest prizes (Best Film, Best Lead Actor, Best
Director).
Oh, and on
an end note, it was a big
Shame that Michael
Fassbender wasn't nominated (pun very much intended,
although I realize such wordplay is
A Dangerous Method).
