With his striking, angular features, demonic smile, and intense performances, Dafoe has been a favourite of auteur filmmakers such as Paul Schrader, Abel Ferrara, Lars von Trier, and Wes Anderson, which has earned him a wealth of interesting roles in smaller, more artistic productions. His intensity makes him magnificent at playing characters on the edge, but it can also risk tipping into borderline caricature if the material and/or director doesn't guide him properly.
